Cherokee Nation Management & Consulting improves water quality through education and training

August 25, 2020

Cherokee Nation Management & Consulting (CNMC) improves water quality at Army Garrison Fort Bliss located on the borders of Texas, New Mexico and Mexico. Since 2015, this team has trained hundreds of soldiers and civilians on the importance of pollution prevention in support of the Environmental Division of Directorate of Public Works (DPW).

Encompassing approximately 1.1 million acres, Fort Bliss represents a major Department of Defense installation that supports contingency operations while providing high-quality services to a growing population of soldiers and civilians. DPW, including the Environmental Division, is responsible for the maintenance of the installation’s infrastructure and environment, which is located in the Chihuahuan Desert and receives all of its drinking water from the local aquifers and the Rio Grande River. Due to this, the need for "only rain down the drain" education is key to prevent pollution from entering the installation’s storm drains and eventually into the drinking water. This is a valuable lesson to keep in mind wherever you are – being mindful of what you’re putting on your lawn, what may be leaking from your vehicle, or what you may be pouring in the street!

In addition to performing site inspections through DPW’s Stormwater Program, each year, the CNMC team educates hundreds of soldiers, civilians and site personnel conducting activities that could have a negative impact on the natural environment at Fort Bliss. Furthermore, CNMC conducts the Environmental Officer Course to train all environmental officers at the army garrison.

“Through training, this team has been able to reach out to soldiers, civilians, and contractors,” said Rachel Heckel, CNMC Program Manager. “This gives us the opportunity to build strong bonds with the Fort Bliss community and help them achieve environmental compliance.”
