Employee Spotlight: Sasha Arthur focuses on continuous improvement at Cherokee Federal
At Cherokee Federal, many of our team members are front line workers, interacting with customers every day; however, there are many others who provide essential support behind the scenes — doing their part to move the organization forward. Sasha Arthur is one of them.
Sasha first joined the company as a cost accountant for Cherokee Nation Industries before becoming assistant controller for Cherokee Nation Businesses. She then transitioned to Cherokee Federal where she is in charge of all government services billing.
In this role, Sasha collaborates with coworkers across different departments to integrate, automate and streamline back-office processes. Their efforts help increase efficiencies for Cherokee Federal and ultimately benefit customers.
“We provide back-office support that enables Cherokee Federal to comply with contract requirements and meet our customers’ needs,” Sasha says. “We do this by eliminating redundancies in our billing workflow, improving on-time billing performance and adhering to customer invoicing specifications.”
Those are a few of the many initiatives that Sasha has implemented to help Cherokee Federal work smarter, not harder.
She also worked with IT to develop the indirect rate structure and forward-pricing model for Cherokee’s first cost-plus government contract. The accounting system sped up the billing process and received approval from the Defense Contract Audit Agency.
According to Patricia Russell, director of government contracting compliance, Sasha is always ready and willing to accept new – and at times difficult – challenges that are common in the growth of successful businesses.
“Sasha is a capable team player and works tirelessly to identify and present solutions to ensure the continued success of Cherokee Federal,” Patricia says. “She is highly thought of by her peers and coworkers and is a valuable addition to the financial compliance group.”
As Cherokee Federal continues to grow, the company’s processes must evolve. Sasha continues to provide back-office support to internal leaders and front-line employees so that these necessary transitions are seamless. She and her colleagues work with PRIDE – an acronym for the company’s core values of purpose, respect, integrity, discipline and excellence – to find a solution for everyone involved.
“A system upgrade resulted in a significant change to a billing support schedule,” Sasha says. “Not only did the back-office IT employees work all weekend to create and implement an improved support schedule, they demonstrated two of Cherokee Federal’s values – discipline and excellence – while addressing the task at hand.”
Sasha’s contributions to Cherokee Federal have not gone unnoticed. Recently, she was asked to serve as system administrator for the company’s accounting system, Costpoint. In this new role, she will lead the configuration of the accounting and reporting software.
“The recognition of Sasha’s efforts is well-deserved,” says Carolyn Price, senior director of operational accounting. “Her skill and knowledge have shown the management team she has the talent to do more. This is an exciting new role for her.”
Sasha is a Cherokee Nation citizen and has been with the company for 12 years. Before that, she was a cost accountant at Pilgrim’s Pride and a marketing manager assistant at the Wal-Mart home office in Bentonville, Arkansas.
Sasha earned her bachelor’s degree in business administration from Northeastern State University and majored in marketing. She attended NSU as a scholarship recipient of the President’s Leadership Class.
Having grown up in Adair county, Sasha chose to work at Cherokee so she could move closer to home. She has stayed with the company because she believes in Cherokee Federal’s mission: to diversify and grow the economy of Cherokee Nation and create jobs for Cherokee citizens in Oklahoma and other states. Company profits support future business investments as well as programs and services for tribal citizens – ensuring better lives today and tomorrow.
“I appreciate the way Cherokee Federal invests back into the Nation,” Sasha remarks. “My husband is a navy veteran, so I also like working for a company that supports the war fighter.”
