Employee Spotlight: Shanta’e Long has found a shared mission with Cherokee Federal

May 05, 2021

For Shanta’e Long, finding an employer with a shared purpose is important. She has often researched companies of interest throughout her career and inquired about their culture. It was no different with Cherokee Federal.

“It is essential for me to be a part of a company that has a mission I support,” Shanta’e says. “After connecting with a few current Cherokee Federal employees, I learned that Cherokee citizens work for the company, the management team is diverse, and the operations general managers are very personable and transparent with employees. After hearing all these great things, it became an easy decision for me to want to be a part of this amazing organization.”

As deputy program manager at Cherokee Nation Operational Solutions (CNOS), Shanta’e manages a federal contract portfolio with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and subcontracts with industry partners. She currently supports contracts within the Office of the Associate Director for Policy and Strategy and the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control.

“Shanta’e’s work ethic and energy are matched by her positive outlook and persona,” says Rich Mylod, senior account executive at CNOS. “She does an exceptional job balancing a large and demanding workload that includes managing her contracts, leading employees and assisting the account manager for the overall portfolio. Through it all, Shanta’e exhibits fortitude, resilience working long hours, and perseverance as she tackles one priority after another with the same level of energy and determination.”

Shanta’e successfully managed a contract for the CDC Office of the Associate Director for Policy and Strategy. Due to her remarkable performance, the client awarded the contract to CNOS. The CDC and its employees requested that she remain the deputy program manager.

“Shanta’e is mission driven, customer focused and fully vested in the CDC’s mission,” says Jackie Mathis, program manager at CNOS. “She brings that vision to every task she encounters. She is always front and center serving as a catalyst as she manages her contracts, develops her staff and establishes solid relationships with clients. She is adept at employing and developing seasoned teams of highly qualified employees that exceed expectations.”

Shanta’e describes her Atlanta management team as a close-knit, well-balanced group.

“Our diverse backgrounds allow us to complement each other,” she adds. “We bounce ideas off each other, we share newly acquired information, and we support each other professionally and personally.”

What she first learned about Cherokee Federal’s management team before joining the company has proven to be true. According to Shanta’e, her experience with Cherokee Federal’s leadership team has been phenomenal.

“The management team has empowered me and supported me in my professional and personal endeavors since the beginning,” she says. “I was most recently encouraged to take advantage of the company’s professional membership program and acquire my Project Manager Professional certification. Cherokee’s leadership has shown me that they trust me to do my job.”

During her tenure with CNOS, Shanta’e has successfully transitioned her team to working remotely while meeting check-in requirements for the CDC during the pandemic; she improved relationships with the client by strengthening recruitment efforts and addressing concerns in a timely manner; and successfully met contract requirements which helped Cherokee earn a recompete award.

“Shanta’e is a critical thinker and problem solver,” Rich says. “She continuously focuses on gaining a deeper knowledge of the company’s processes and procedures in order to identify solutions and deliver results.”

Prior to joining Cherokee Federal, Shanta’e provided human resources management and contract management services and solutions to advance the mission of agencies such as the CDC and Robins Air Force Base.
