Employee Spotlight: Katie Stark modernizes DoD health records during COVID-19

March 22, 2021

Cherokee Federal employs more than 3,300 talented individuals whose technical skills and drive are focused on building next-gen technologies, solving complex challenges and serving more than 60 federal clients.

To help our clients complete their mission, we invest in the brightest talent and celebrate employees who do exceptional work — employees such as Katie Stark, program manager for Cherokee Nation Operational Solutions (CNOS), a Cherokee Federal company.

Katie leads a diverse team of electronic health records (EHR) professionals. EHRs are digital versions of medical records that make information available instantly and securely to authorized users. In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, this work is now more important than ever before. The privacy rights of patients, precise and accurate data for clinicians, and the timely resolution of insurance claims demand near-perfect execution from EHR providers.

COVID-19 put the need for good EHR management front and center. Public health officials need fast access to COVID data and patients need next-to-instant access to test results.

“This business demands trust at every step of the process,” comments Rich Mylod, Cherokee Federal technology account executive. “We are extremely proud of Katie, who has developed a team that continues to exceed all client expectations.”

As a result of Katie’s leadership and vision, CNOS recently was awarded an EHR support contract from the Department of Defense valued at up to $42 million.

Before joining Cherokee Federal, Katie worked for a leading EHR vendor for nine years. She specialized in handling C-suite level projects that required close-knit collaboration, proactive risk mitigation and bottom-line results for clients.

“The skill set and knowledge that Katie brings to our team is invaluable,” says Dirk Catron, CNOS operations general manager. “She continues to elevate our work, and I am proud to have her on our team.”

Katie chose to work for Cherokee Federal because she found a sense of purpose in its mission — to diversify and grow the economy of Cherokee Nation and create jobs for its citizens. Cherokee’s profits support future business investments as well as programs and services for tribal citizens — ensuring better lives today and tomorrow.

Katie also found a team-focused mentality and the overall respect towards maintaining a good work-life balance.

“People are very willing to pitch in, and it’s just a very different culture than other places,” Katie remarks. “That’s just what I needed. Whether we’re going line-by-line through a proposal or helping with device set-up at a military treatment facility, I love the team mentality and the ‘do whatever it takes’ approach.”

Even in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Katie’s team has successfully maintained and renewed its EHR business — establishing creative ways to deliver work remotely.

“In my day-to-day interactions with the team, there’s always a genuine interest about the well-being of our associates,” Katie says. “It’s clear this company realizes that we are here to deliver on our professional duties, but understands we’re human too. It’s very apparent in the way we’re handling the current COVID situation.”

Cherokee Federal strives to be the employer of choice. At Cherokee, Katie found a great work-life balance and a team who is always willing to help tackle a problem.

“No one ‘pulls rank,’ and I get that feeling from my direct team, our support teams, and our leadership,” Katie adds. “It’s a refreshing change of pace.”

Katie chose to make a difference through her work at Cherokee Federal. Will you? There’s only one way to find out. Join our team and make an immediate impact.
